A MAZE OF A CITY
The tour lasts 5 - 6 hours
This is an easy and comfortable walking tour that usually lasts 5-6 hours, including lunch in one of the very many Old City restaurants. Jaffa Gate is our starting point. Jerusalem is one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in the world. The Old City of Jerusalem is arguably the most complex spot on earth – a maze of different religions, contrasting smells and tastes, countless surprises and disagreements all go together to create a unique and fascinating mosaic. We will stroll through the alleyways of the Old City, stopping from time to time to hear an interesting story, an impressive historical event, a pleasant spot, and even the occasional culinary tip. We will climb up to some vantage points offering vistas of the Old City and beyond. We will “speak” with the Crusaders who conquered the city, and “listen” to the opinion of Salah a-Din who freed the city from the Crusaders. We will cross the Christian Quarter before moving on to the Muslim Quarter.
We will visit several of the Stations of the Cross along the Via Dolorosa – the route that Jesus took to his place of crucifixion, burial and resurrection. Today the Church of the Holy Sepulcher – the most sacred Christian holy place in the world – is standing there. While visiting the Church of the Holy Sepulcher we will learn about the delicate status quo agreements among the different Christian communities and come to understand why the guardians of this Christian church are actually – Muslims! Our visit will also include the beautiful Austrian Hospice (don’t worry – it isn’t a hospital), with its roof offering wonderful views and its gem of a garden. We will taste the Austrian strudel baked on the premises according to an original Viennese recipe. Moving on, we will visit the Small Kotel and climb up onto the rooftops above the markets. Here we will learn about the relations between Jewish settlers who have moved into the Muslim Quarter and their Muslims and Christian neighbors. Our tour will be end after we visit the Western Wall and put a prayer note in the cracks between the ancient stones before we move on. By prior arrangement, this tour can also include visits to the Temple Mount, the Western Wall Tunnel, and the City of David.
